Horatio’s Garden is a national charity which builds and looks after beautiful gardens within NHS spinal injury centres in the UK, to nurture the wellbeing of people after spinal injury.

Spinal injury can happen to anyone at any time. The results are life-changing and devastating. Life may never be the same for you, or for your family and friends around you.

Horatio's Garden know how critical it is to have an incredible garden on offer right outside your hospital ward. A place for reflection and adjustment, privacy and solace, joy and companionship for all who need it. The charity lead gardening sessions to grow and cultivate plants, arts workshops so people can discover new skills and a programme of live music and events. Designed to be enjoyed all-year-round, their gardens offer a warm, welcoming place for family and friends who may have travelled hours for a visit.

That's why they're currently bringing their eighth garden, Horatio's Garden Sheffield & East to life at The Princess Royal Spinal Injuries Centre at Northern General Hospital. Designed by four-time RHS Chelsea gold medal winners Charlotte Harris and Hugo Bugg of Harris Bugg Studio, the garden began its story as the charity's 'Best in Show' show garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2023. This show garden forms the heart of the eight-times larger Horatio's Garden Sheffield & East, which is designed specifically for people with mobility needs. This garden will support people from an extensive geographical area, from the West Midlands to East Anglia, South Yorkshire to Lincolnshire. It will open in spring 2025.

For this session Ruth Calder, Head Gardener of Horatio's Garden Sheffield & East will give an exclusive talk about this uniquely beautiful garden being brought to life at The Princess Royal Spinal Injuries Centre at our Northern General Hospital, the second largest spinal injury centre in the UK.

Our speaker, Ruth Calder is the Head Gardener of Horatio's Garden Sheffield & East. She is a Kew graduate who has worked in heritage and botanic gardens, community horticulture projects, and as a freelance planting designer and consultant. Her enthusiasm for gardens stems from a belief in their ability to create positive change in the individuals, communities and environments around them.
