The Tangled Bank is a research project underway at St Andrews Botanic Garden, aimed at finding ways to conserve plants and teach communities how to respond to climate change and the biodiversity crisis. Aiming to recreate some of Fife’s most threatened habitats, the project includes woodlands, meadows, and coastal sand dunes. By recreating these habitats, research can be undertaken into plant communities, examining how the plants interact and how they react to disruption and the impact of invasive species, whilst showcasing the best of local plant life.

Dr Watkins will discuss the challenges of the project, which included removing the garden’s glasshouses, and outcomes to date.

Harry Watkins is Director of St Andrews Botanic Garden, where he works on research, conservation and education programmes across Fife. He has particular interests in the interactions between plants and urban environments under climate change.
