Rob King ‘My Sheffield Garden’ live lecture

This talk and all our lectures are FREE for Friends of the Botanical Gardens to attend. Members of the public are also welcome to join us on payment of £5 at the door on the day. Live talks are held in the Education Centre in the grounds of the Botanical Gardens - easily accessed via the Thompson Road Entrance.

‘My Sheffield Garden’ is a garden full of adventure, created by Rob King as a beautiful garden not just for adults, but for children to enjoy too!

From an elevated deck, this Beauchief garden slopes away with a wooded hill in the distance. It is packed with plants and Rob makes the most of the borrowed landscape, liking to reuse and incorporate items others have thrown away. He is not afraid to experiment and make changes to his garden, which over the years has evolved into a space that has soul and character.

In his talk, Rob will destroy the myth that you can't have a nice garden for grown-ups if you want to incorporate play areas and equipment for children. He has created both a fun andbeautiful garden and will talk through how a clever use of design, planting, trees, and salvaged materials has made this possible. Rob will also speak about his gardening influences, how he created this garden from scratch on a shoestring budget, and how he manages to have colour all year round.

Rob started his Instagram account at the beginning of lockdown and his eclectic and artistic style quickly gathered followers. His garden has proved immensely popular, and he has since featured on BBC Radio Sheffield’s Grow Show and in print in both Modern Gardens and the RHS Magazine, the latter following a visit from gardening expert David Hurrion.
