Jenny Stephenson ‘Medicinal Plants - Powerful Prescriptions Through History’ Live Lecture

This talk and all our lectures are FREE for Friends of the Botanical Gardens to attend. Members of the public are also welcome to join us on payment of £5 at the door on the day. Live talks are held in the Education Centre in the grounds of the Botanical Gardens - easily accessed via the Thompson Road Entrance.

In this illustrated talk, Dr Jenny Stephenson will give an overview of the history of the use of plant-based medications over the world and relate this to their basic chemistry and use of some in today’s medicines. Characteristics of the relevant plants will be discussed.

Dr Jenny Stephenson studies botanical art at Sheffield Botanical Gardens and has had a lifelong interest in medicinal plants. With a Diploma in medical history, she gives regular talks on varied topics relating to health and has written three books on medical related historical subjects including one about Pharmacy which includes medicinal plants.

Jenny was a GP in Sheffield for 40 years and now is a honorary clinical adviser to the Cavendish Cancer Care Centre. Funds raised through the talks and books go to support this charity and other local ones.
