The National Collection of Diervilla at Sheffield Botanical Gardens

Sheffield Botanical Gardens is the home of the National Collections of Weigela, Diervilla and Sarcococca as designated by Plant Heritage (NCCPG).

Collaborative research with The University of Sheffield

A research project between Sheffield Botanic Gardens, FOBS and the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences at The University of Sheffield has been put on hold for the time being. Plant material already collected for the study will be stored at the Department. We are very hopeful that the project will continue at some stage so that by DNA sequencing of sections of the genome of the Weigela & Diervilla species in the National Collections at the Gardens, it will be possible to identify similarities and differences within and between species, the degree to which Weigela & Diervilla are genetically related and to draw up a relationship tree.

Diervilla (Caprifoliaceae)

PAGE UNDER CONSTRUCTION

The genus was named after a Dr. Dierville, a French surgeon who travelled in North America in the early 18th century. This is a small genus of 3 species of hardy, deciduous suckering shrubs native to North America. Previously grouped with plants now known as Weigela, the two genera are easily distinguished from each other. In Diervilla the flowers are two-lipped, invariably yellow, and borne on the current season's growth, whereas in Weigela the corolla is regular, (not two-lipped) and the flowers are borne on short lateral twigs on the growth of the previous year.
CULTIVATION
Diervillas will grow in full sun or part shade in fertile soil. They should be pruned back in spring before growth commences, when they send up a dense mass of shoots that will blossom during summer.

The Diervilla collection was replanted in 2015 and can be found in beds outside the wall of the Robert Marnock Garden, the boundary between areas K and H.
