NATIONAL COLLECTIONS

Faced with the rapid extinction of plant species, botanical gardens play a pivotal role in the conservation of plants. As part of the commitment towards plant conservation, Sheffield Botanical Gardens contains a number of plant collections, of which three have National Collection status.

A national plant collection is a registered and documented group of plants that can be linked botanically by being part of the same plant group, or by a historical or geographical connection. This conservation scheme ensures these plants will continue to be available as an invaluable resource for the future. The scheme is run by the national charity Plant Heritage.

For more information on our National Collections, contact the Curator of the Gardens, Ian Turner on 0114 2500500.
